Lil Wayne dominated rap music at the 2009 Grammy Awards winning four awards including…
Best Rap Album – Tha Carter III
Best Rap Solo Performance – “A Milli”
Best Rap Song – “Lollipop”
The Legendary Rapper Also Wins as a Featured Artist
Best Rap Performance by Duo or Group – “Swagga Like Us”
These are the New Orleans native’s first Grammy awards for his own album.
Lil Wayne lit up the Grammy stage with two powerful showstoppers. He delivered a heart-wrenching tribute to New Orleans with jazz musicians Allen Touissant, Terrence Blanchard and the Dirty Dozen brass band. His cool performance of “Swagga Like Us,” brought rap’s greatest artists on the stage together — Lil Wayne with T.I., Jay-Z, Kanye West and a very pregnant M.I.A.
Lil Wayne was the first musical artist since 2005 to sell a million albums in the first week of release. Tha Carter III sold over 1 million units in its debut week. The Carter III is the best-selling album release of 2008, having sold well over 2.7 million copies domestically since its release in June. The album held the No. 1 position on the Billboard’s Top 200 for three weeks and “Lollipop” topped the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart for five weeks. In August, Lil Wayne set the record for charting 13 tracks as a lead or featured artist on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart at simultaneously, including the Number One “Lollipop” and “A Milli.”
T.I.’s Road to Redemption (45 Days to Go), which started filming in June will debut on MTV February 10 2009 at 9PM. Filming is expected to continue into March. T.I. hopes the show will scare young people away from doing a life of crime. TIP was convicted of felony gun charges last year and will begin serving a sentence of one year March 27. So, I guess we’ll have to wait a while for Season 2.
Here’s the trailer…
Jay Z Rapped with Coldplay during the song “Lost” at the Grammys (About a minute and a half into the song). Hey, did he gesture toward the Coldplay singer when he said “Judas”. Hmmm…
Coldplay went on to win Album of the Year and Song of the Year for “Viva La Vida” and Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. Wow, that’s a long award title.
Amare’s Stoudemire celebrated the merge of his record label Hypocalypto Entertainment under the umbrella of Grand Hustle with his first artist, Juice. Special invited guests such as T.I., Killer Mike, Big Kuntry King, Lisa Leslie (WNBA), Ovie (Falcons), D. Woods, Drumma Boy, Deon Grant, and more all came out to show their support. Check out some pics of the event after the jump!
The video for Jamie Foxx’s next single, “Blame It” featuring the Ringleader himself, T-Pain is shooting next week in LA with Hype Williams directing! It should be a banger. No word on when you’ll be able to see the finished clip yet, but if any Behind-the-scenes footage surfaces we’ll make sure you get to see it first! If you were directing the video for this song, what would you do for it?
Congrats to T-Pain on having the #1 video on BET’s ‘106 & Park’ show this week with his new single, “Freeze” featuring the homie, Chris Brown. Thanks to all the dedicated T-Pain fans out there who helped make Pain and Chris #1. Wanna help the Ringleader and support the THR33 RINGZ movement? Vote for the video and keep it at #1 and then buy the video on itunes.
